Panoramic Views from Peveril Castle in Castleton

Peveril Castle in Castleton, the Peak District, is one of the oldest Norman castles in England being built by Henry II in 1176.

The castle's keep is still standing making an imposing structure, and can be explored along with the ruins of the other buildings and castle walls.

It’s in an amazing location high above Castleton providing stunning views over the village, as well as Cave Dale and out towards the peak of Mam Tor and the surrounding hills and valley.

The castle is managed by English Heritage and is worth a visit if you’re in the area, but I will warn you it is a very steep walk up the hill to get to the top! There are a few benches on the way up to have a rest though, and the views are definitely worth it!

Our Experience... Best Sunrise in the Peak District

We reach the carpark at Peak Cavern just before sunrise and make the short walk up Cave Dale to take a good vantage point. The early morning mist is lingering, making the valley look like somewhere from another world!

As we climb to the top the sun starts to burn through the mist, revealing the castle in all of it's glory.

The castle grounds are quite small but make for a good explore. There is a visitor centre and information signs around telling us about some of the history, we climb up the keep, and the views have to be seen to be believed!

TrovenTrippers Tip... Castleton Walk to Peveril Castle

If you're looking for the best sunrise spot in the Peak District, then Mam Tor is one of the most popular. But Cave Dale and Peveril Castle are just the opposite side of the valley and are as easily as accessible being only a few minutes walk from the carpark.

While sunrise on Mam Tor takes some beating, you will likely share it with dozens, if not hundreds of other people! Whereas watching it from above Cave Dale with the castle in the foreground, you will likely be completely on your own to enjoy the experience in peace.

You can also hike to Mam Tor from Cave Dale, with lots of circular walks from Castleton taking in Mam Tor, Winnats Pass, and Cave Dale.
