A FAMILY FRIENDLY GUIDE TO MONT ST MICHEL: NORMANDY
Plan a magical family day at Mont Saint-Michel with kids — from getting there and exploring the abbey to picnic spots, beaches, and fun local tips.
“Mont St Michel, is it a fairytale? YES!
Is it busy and a logistical nightmare? Also yes!
We travelled in July 2024 with our then 3 & 7 year olds and here are our tips and highlights!”
How to Spend a Day in Mont Saint-Michel with Kids
Mont Saint-Michel feels straight out of a storybook — medieval streets, sandy shores, and an abbey that seems to float above the sea. Visiting with children can be magical, as long as you plan it right.
Getting There and Around
Located on the Normandy coast, Mont Saint-Michel is easy to reach from Saint-Malo, Caen, or Rennes. Families can drive, take the train, or arrive via ferry from the UK. Parking is set 2.5 km away, with a free shuttle that drops you close to the entrance. For the easiest access with kids, use the P2 car park, just a short walk from the shuttle point.
Exploring the Mount
The narrow lanes and steep staircases make it a real adventure for little ones. Climb to the abbey for sweeping views, or take the quieter Fanils path with fewer steps. Families with toddlers should bring a baby carrier rather than a buggy.
Food and Picnics
Eat before you visit or pack a picnic — nearby Beauvoir has relaxed cafés and brasseries. Inside the walls, space is tight and restaurants fill quickly. There’s also a small snack bar by the car park for drinks and sandwiches.
Family Highlights
Children under 18 enter the abbey free, and younger kids can enjoy medieval museums or short guided bay walks to explore quicksand safely. Don’t miss the tiny Venelle du Guet alley — it’s a fun photo stop!
After exploring, head down to the beach for a peaceful picnic and views of the Mont from below.
